The Mommy Key Chain

I have always loved BIG bags. This is good because since having a baby I now have to bring one EVERYWHERE... usually filled to the top with anything and everything for baby emergencies. Forget room for anything I might need. One problem I have run into is loosing my keys in the chaos. I have found myself more times than not searching through my huge bag in the pouring rain, while holding B trying to unlock the car. Since I never have enough hands I usually throw the keys in the bag and regret it later.  While I was out shopping one day I saw a lanyard and thought I need that but really not SO big... and cuter. Thus the Mommy Key Chain...

Ok lets get started. I used vintage sheets to make two and then I used an outdoor fabric for the other. I liked how the sheets were softer and easier to work with but you can use whatever you like. I also made a few different sizes. I am telling you how to make the size I found most functional but the dimensions can change. For this you will need:

Fabric of your choosing
Package of "D" rings
Sewing machine/ thread
Stitch Witchery

I folded over my fabric and cut it into a 4.5 x 15 inch strip.

Next, I cut three strips of stitch witchery and placed between the fabric on the wrong side. I ironed the wrong sides together on a high cotton setting.

After I had my fabric fused together I folded my strip in half and sewed along the edge. I then pulled the fabric strip right side out to hide my stitches.
This is my strip before pulling right side out...

Sorry, I don't know what happened to the picture of this but lastly I top stitched the strip with the seam on the underneath side in the center. I folded my unfinished edges over around the D ring and sewed in place. I went over it about 4 times to really secure it.

And Done - and easy way to find your keys in a huge bag and keep them on hand without actually having to hold them!

Here are the three I did in different widths and lengths. The center one is my favorite but its all personal preference. The smallest blue one I made out of an outdoor fabric.

Hope you all are having a great week... we are getting TONS of snow here. So far about 2 feet at our house. Sounds like a perfect day to hang out with B and craft! :)

You know you are loving the camo pjs.  B checking out all the snow!

Our back deck... cant wait to shovel all that off. Whew.

  1. Great idea on the key chain. I carry a large tote and want something softer and easy to find for my keys. Can't wait to try it!

  4. Thanks! The skinnier one I cut 3.5 inches on the fold - the wider one 4.5. Hope that helps!
