Scrabble Tile Art Tutorial

For Mothers Day Matt surprised me with a Silhouette.
( Apparently, I was a good Mom this year??)

Friday night we sat down together to try and figure this bad boy out.
( Technology and I do not get along)
Lucky Matt- just how he wanted to spend his Friday night... CRAFTING!

No, not really but he was a good sport.

I have been loving the Scrabble inspired art I've seen around. So here is a personalized take on that...

HOWEVER, for all of you non- Silhouette owners I'll show you how to make your own WITHOUT using a Silhouette since - well its just mean to post great projects requiring supplies not everyone has.

To get started head over to where ever you get your lumber.

I bought a board that was 5 1/2 inches wide by 4 ft long- I made two sets of these as one is a wedding gift. I was able to get 8 "tiles" out of it- not sure what I am going to do with the extra two. Hmmm.

I had Matt cut my tiles to measure 5 1/2 by 5 1/2.

Then I sanded and stained them ( Although truth be told I wish I had used a bit darker stain).

I did a few coats of stain until I got bored with it and wanted to move on to the next step. I think I did three coats.

Next, I used my Silhouette to make the heart and letters. BUT you don't have to use one.

You can use a stencil or the vinyl letters from the scrap booking section.

To finish it off I sprayed it with a clear sealant spray.

There you have it- cute personalized decor for under $20 bucks!

Can someone give me some suggestions for my mantle. I am at a loss. Its very narrow and currently empty. :(

  1. LOVE the tiles! What a cute idea!! Maybe add some tall branches in the vase to give it some height along the mirror? I do like the white motif you have going with the vases and the mirror. :)

  5. Love these! And I appreciate the shout out to those of us non-silouette peeps. As for the mantle, I'd love to see a pic of the whole thing, but first thing that comes to mind is something tall. You could use a large glass vase or apothecary jar and fill it with seasonal items. I love the idea if natural items for summer, branches, shells, starfish, rattan orbs, etc. Hope that helps!

  8. What a sweet gift for mother's day! You know, you could also use this concept to decorate a playroom where you could rearrange the letters to your liking.
