Monday-Friday Kitchen Towels

I have been in desperate need of some new kitchen towels for oh... say 2 years. So the other night at Target I found these soft ( think Sham-Wow) towels 10 for $10. I loved the bright colors but wanted to spruce them up a little as they usually hang right on my stove for all to see... and well... looks matter. :)

Want to make some? Thought so...

Grab some towels and fabric you want to look at Monday thru Friday. I picked a vintage pillow case out of my stash since it matched the towels perfectly.

Next, grab a erasable marker and write out M, T, W,T, F ( I did my free hand but you can use a stencil too)

Cut them out - OK VERY IMPORTANT - Once they are all cut out get them wet, throw them in the dryer for a bit to erase your marker lines. ( If you don't and iron over them it will set your marker and you will be sad.)

I used Stitch Witchery to secure them to the towels before stitching around the edge. You dont HAVE to ... but I think it makes it easier.

Finally, I did a quick zig-zag stitch around the outside and you've got yourself some good-lookin' kitchen towels. :)

Dont ask me what you are supposed to do about Saturday and Sunday- you're on your own kids.
Happy Monday!

Flower Arranging

With snow storm after snow storm, I have been feeling less than peppy. Nothing like 3 plus feet of snow outside to make you want to hibernate till spring...
The trees in our back yard

What better way to "think spring" than fresh flowers?!
I love how flowers can brighten your day, cheer up a room, and over all just add a subtle, yet beautiful statement in a room. Over the next few months I am going to try and add more flowers and arrangements around the house. Lucky for me my Dad has one green thumb! I asked him to give us all some tips on arrangements so once you spend the money on the flowers you can help make them last and look their very best! :) Here he is...

Flower arranging isn’t that difficult but there are some simple rules and tools that make the project a success. First the tools.
Over the years I have collected various tools/supplies, actually bits and pieces from projects people have asked me to design. I just keep a box handy and at some point these pieces have a purpose. To arrange with fresh flowers the best tools will be a pair of pruners, some wire cutters, a sharp pocket knife and  good pair of scissors. There are plenty of other tools that might come in handy depending on the arrangement materials. For example if you are going to set out a vase of cuts from a spring flowering shrub, then you would need a hammer to smash the cut end of the branch so that it will soak up water more rapidly and extend the life of the blossoming branch. But for table-top arranging the tools mentioned will be enough.
Now for the rules. First, the height of the arrangement should be about one and one-half the height of the container you are putting the flowers into and second, always try to use  an odd number of flowers. That’s it. Now for the other rule that probably needs to be mentioned; the above rules can and should be broken from time to time.

Alright you’ve selected the container for the arrangement, give it a good wash with hot soapy water; kills any moldy residue left over from the last arrangement. Set it aside for the moment. Go and collect a set of flowers from your garden, grocery store or farmers market. Look the flowers over, just don’t grab something, study the leaves for a moment ; are they limp (flaccid to be technical) or do they hold their shape. Also look at the flower petals, particularly the tips and edges. Does the color of the flower extend to the edge or have they started to wilt/brown. Fresh material extends the life of the arrangement.

Now take the container and fill it with cold water. Put a splash of bleach into the water; the-rule-of-thumb is 1tsp. bleach to one gallon of water, adjust your splash accordingly.
The bleach acts as a flower freshener, extending their lives. Unwrap your flowers, you should have a selection of flowers along with a selection of greenery. The greenery is used for filler, a background for the color of the flowers. Re-cut the flowers and the greenery about 2” from the store cut and make a sharp angle cut instead of a square cut on the stems. The angle cut exposes more of the water conducting tissue in the stem. Immediately after they are cut place them in a holding container filled with cold water. You will work the flowers/greenery out of this container and into your arrangement.
Arranging the flowers is now directed by your choice of container. It is also directed by how your arrangement is to be used. For example if you are creating a centerpiece for the dinner table; the arrangement should be low and relatively long. There is nothing worse than having to talk through an arrangement to the guest on the other side. Another consideration is that dinner table arrangements should probably not be made from extremely fragrant flowers, you want your guest to smell the food not eat the arrangement. If your arrangement is going on a hallway table, it can be one-sided, etc.
I usually start the arrangement by placing the greenery into the container. These greens act to stabilize the placement of the flowers. So determine the height of your arrangement, make the cut and stick the first piece of greenery or filler material in. Work the balance of the greenery into the rough shape of your arrangement. Tall and skinny, long and flat, round, oval; have some fun. Next work in your large flowers with some sort of symmetry that lends balance but not stiffness. I don’t really know how to explain this but after a few arrangements, you’ll get the feel for it. In a vase setting generally the larger flowers fall at the base of the arrangement with smaller flowers climbing up out of the vase. Perhaps the best advice I can give is to go to a florist shop and study the pre-made arrangements and practice....don’t be discouraged be creative. In times past I have used the green tops of carrots as filler, whatever works.
Finally there is an excellent book by Rebecca Cole, ‘Flower Power, Fresh Fabulous Arrangements’, it would be worth adding to you book collection.

Thanks so much Dad! I never would have thought to add bleach to help flowers last! I hope you guys have a great weekend and don't forget to pick up some fresh flowers while you are out about! :)

Mommy Moments.

Everyday Bristol is growing and changing.  Im reminded of this when I go through her closet and have to pull out clothes she has out grown. I tend to buy her clothing a little a head and usually when I buy it I cant picture her fitting into that size. Last night as I pulled items out that no longer fit I became painfully aware of how fast she is growing up. ( Their may have been tears.)  Things I remember buying while pregnant or when she was a newborn are now gone, packed in boxes. My "stock pile" is now dwindling to just a size a head- instead of 4.

Last night she told me "Thank you" when I handed her, her cup and insisted on "reading" her own bedtime story. While I was sewing, she climbed up -by herself - in the chair next to me. When I went to put her Pjs on they were almost too small. At bedtime she pointed to have me turn on her music.
B please slow down... just a little.
Mama needs to catch up.

On another note... anyone have any suggestions to get B to eat anything besides fruit cups?? Her diet is made up of fruit cups, pretzels, cheese sticks, and cereal. We give her anything we are eating to try
( which usually ends up being spit out, fed to the dog, or thrown)
AHHHHH!

Freezer Paper Love

For almost a year I have been reading about Freezer paper stenciling and how AMAZING it is. Finally, I had the perfect project to try it on. ( Along with a working printer now)

I had seen this shirt at the GAP for Bristol.

I loved it because really her best friend and Valentine is our dog. They are buds.  ( Not sure Gage would agree with this statement.)

I thought this shirt would be perfect for Bristol AND she could wear it after Valentines day. I just really didn't want to spend $20 bucks on a ANOTHER t-shirt for B. ( I just noticed its now down to $15.99) Anyway... I decided Freezer paper and I were gonna have a date.

Their are TONS of great tutorials out there on how this works. I followed along with this one on "Make it and Love It." I thought it was easy and straight forward.

So I rounded up a white long sleeved t-shirt that I got from Wal-Mart for $1.00 and went to town. Of course I decided to add some "flair" by glitter-izing it. :)

Im pretty happy how it turned out. A few things:
1. Dont shake the glitter off until you are SURE the paint is dry. Your hearts will run and you will get glitter where you dont want it.
2. Dont get so excited about your Freezer Stenciling that you forget to put something under your shirt as you paint your puppy dog black. Because you MAY end up with a black puppy on your ironing board. :(
Other than that I would say Freezer Stenciling is just as awesome as everyone claimed. :)
Here is the silhouette templet I used for the puppy if any of you want to try it. Make sure when you print you make it smaller because its a 8x10 size originally.

Pottery Barn Knock off Wreath

** I had a really hard time photographing this for some reason. The angles all look odd and was just not photographing as good as I was hoping- I realized B's room has TERRIBLE lighting **

Ok. This was going to be a tutorial. BUT its not- well not really.  ( First step: spray paint. Well Im not going to photograph that and risk getting paint on my camera and after I didn't photograph that I just got lazy  busy and did the rest of the project without my camera -sorry)  Ill give you the quick walk through though. :)

I had seen this in the Pottery Barn catalog and loved the idea. ( of course I cannot find a picture of it anywhere- so I had to photograph my old catalog- yes I keep my old catalogs.)  I wanted something above/around Bristol's bed however, I felt that any kind of netting would promptly be pulled down when B was angry about going to bed.  When I saw this I instantly loved it! AND it was something I thought would be pretty easy to make myself.

Pottery Barn Kids Versions...

 My version.

Ok to make this here is what you do:

1. Find a cheap wicker wreath
2. Spray paint the wreath whatever color you want ( I did white)
3. Get silk flowers and beads and weave throughout BOTH top and bottom ( I thought I might have to use hot glue but they worked great just weaving through the wicker branches)
4. Cut four pieces of ribbon equal lengths and weave into your wreath equal spaces apart.  Gather all your ends and sew ( or you could hot glue) them together.
5. Tie a bow around the top to hide your stitches or hot glue.
6. Hang up above your daughters bed and pray it doesn't fall on her in her sleep... because if it does your husband will never let you live it down.

Have a great weekend and maybe my motivation will return after some quality Matt and B time. :)

A TINY bit of organization.

So on my quest for some organization I have made a few baby steps. Teeny, tiny baby steps. :)
I thought I was doing something great when I bought these fabric storage containers for our hats, gloves, and scarves. I didnt really calculate that they would be living on the top shelf of our coat closet and I am only 5 feet tall. Thus I tend to throw things up there but cant see WHERE I am throwing said hat, gloves, or scarves. So I give you exhibit A:

Ew.

Our pile of winter wear ... maybe I should stop buying mittens, hats, and scarves for a bit...

My organization plan=failed. So I thought about labels. I had seen these fabric lettered monograms at Joann's that I thought would work great. But they are about $5-$7 each and well I would rather buy fabric or something a little more exciting than beige monogramed letters. So I pulled out my fabric paint, a stencil, and went to town labeling. Now when I throw things I know which bin to throw it into. :)

After I took this picture I realized my "S" is slightly higher than the other two. Boo. Oh well, it saved me $20 and is now much neater. When Matt got home he suggested we could have labeled them with our first  name initials too.  Hmmm.. that might work better. Ill let you know... we might be turning these to another side and trying that method. :)

On another note...

My Christmas cactus decided to start blooming. This is a miracle since two years ago ( in efforts to HELP it grow) I gave it 3rd degree burns with Miracle Grow. Who knew you had to mix it with water?
Welcome back Christmas Cactus!

* Notice the small little start on the left side? I didnt say it was in FULL bloom. Just that it had one.

Then Tuesday when playing with B in her ball pit ( yes, in) I saw this and had to laugh.

" Warning: Supervision is required at all time. Responsible adults should supervise the use of this toy.."

Now how do you know if you are responsible enough? If you are not, are you supposed to leave the room- your supervision not needed? It goes on to list about 50 things to NOT do while playing with this toy....

When I looked up B was breaking rule #37 " Do not stand, jump, or pull on sides"

Guess I am not the responsible adult Little Tykes was hoping for.  :)
Chat soon,

I left my motivation in 2010.

As I notice the weeks ( yes, weeks) of January roll by I am feeling less and less motivated to complete projects around the house, keep up my cleaning schedule, start all these big organization projects I had planned, or get dressed out of sweats. Is it the time of year? Usually I am very goal oriented and like to check things off my "To-Do" list. Now as I look around I feel more overwhelmed than inspired. Hmmm. Any suggestion to beating winter blahs?
Well, besides going on a vacation here:

I NEED some motivation! :)

Housekeeping.

We are getting MORE snow. Here is what we did today...

We took B out for a ride in her sled. She isn't sure how she feels about the snow. She is more an "inside a lodge, by a fire" type of girl I think. :)

My new outdoor display since squirrels ATE my last one...

After all of ten minutes outside, B was ready to come in. I think it took longer to get us all ready to go out then actually BEING outside.

Later this week Im going to be doing a project with this calendar...

And last but NOT least... please meet the newest member of the family. :)
My new machine! Very excited!!! I wanted a good, simple to operate machine and so far she has been great!

Hopefully things are a little less snowy in your neck of the woods.
